Commission for Consumer Defense approves “traffic light” labeling for advertising warnings on food and alcoholic beverages

The Consumer Defense Commission of the Congress of the Republic approved the modification of the advertising warnings (article 9 of Law N ° 30021 or Law of promotion of healthy eating for children and adolescents) in food products.

The opinion favors “traffic light” labeling with the colors red, yellow and green, leaving aside the recommendations of the Ministry of Health and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). These institutions advocated the method of the black “octagons” and white letters to warn the final consumer in case some processed food presents high contents of sugar, saturated fat, trans fat or sodium, according to the technical parameters defined in the Law.
